Frederick Douglass Gerrit Smith, May 18, 1852

1

Letter of Frederick Douglass to Gerrit Smith, Esq., Respecting Lewis Kossuth.

My Dear Sir:—Holding (as I do hold) your opinions on all matters affecting the cause of human freedom and human elevation, in very high esteem, and believing that I am not singular in this respect, I have for some time greatly desired to obtain a public expression of your views of Lewis Kossuth, his mission and his policy to this country.

Allow me, therefore, thus publicly to solicit a letter from you, (at your earliest convenience,) setting forth at large your opinion of the man and the cause about whom, and about which there is now a difference of feeling so wide and conflicting in this country.

With great respect, I am very truly yours,

Frederick Douglass.
