THE METHODIST CHURCH ON SLAVERY.

PALMYRA, Wis., Sept. 12, 1854.

MR. DOUGLASS: DEAR SIR:—Thinking it would be interesting to you to know what progress we make out West, I cut the enclosed out of the Milwaukee Free Democrat.

The Annual Conference of the M. E. Church in this State, at their recent session in Jamesville, passed the following Resolutions on Slavery:

1. That our opposition to slavery in all its forms, was never more decided and uncompromising than at present.

2. That we regard the Kansas and Nebraska bill passed by our national legislature at its recent session, as an alarming exhibition of the slave power, surpassed in atrocity only by the fugitive slave bill of 1850.

3. That we deem it our duty as ministers of the gospel to preach against slavery as against other violation of religion and humanity, and in every other proper way to labor for its removal from the church and the world.

4. That we affectionately invite our people to co-operate with us by their prayers, and in the use of the elective franchise to effect a repeal of the Fugitive Slave Law, to prevent the further extension of slavery, and to secure its final extirpation from the nation.

5. That we consider it highly improper for the M.E. Church to extend to the church south such salutations as imply fraternal relations.

6. That we deem it altogether inexpedient for the M.E. Church to appropriate money for the establishment or maintenance of missions in slave territory, except on the basis of entire freedom from slavery.

7. That while we believe that the Troy Conference resolutions, submitted to this Conference for concurrence, is well intended, we consider it inadequate to the demands of the case, and therefore we do not concur therein.

8. That we request the next general conference so to alter the general rule on slavery as to read as follows: The buying, selling, or holding a human being as a slave.

9. That our secretary be instructed to forward to each of our bishops a copy of the last resolution to present to the several annual conferences, for their concurrence.

Yours, truly,

RICHARK PACKHAM.
