Charles Russell to Frederick Douglass, August 1854

For Frederick Douglass' Paper.

LETTER FROM REV. CHARLES RUSSELL.

DAYTON, Ohio, August, 1854.

MR. DOUGLASS:—With pleasure I address
these few lines to your paper to inform you
of the celebration which was held in this
place on the first of August, 1854, to which
you were invited.

It was truly a day of independence. From
the hour of midnight until the sun had well
nigh reached its zenith, the lovers of liberty,
equality, unity and fraternity, were assem
bling themselves together, until the noon
day sun poured its genial rays upon 2500 of
our own race, assembled in a beautiful grove
on the bank of the Miami River. Delega
tions from all parts of our State, and from
other States, with fine bands of music, and
badges, banners and regalia, suitable to the
occasion, filled the streets of our woodland
city almost to their utmost capacity. Filled
with the spirit of liberty, and the independ
ence of '76, we marched to the grove and
listened to prayer, music, the reading of the
Declaration of Independence of our own
dear country, and to the eloquence and ora
tory of our worthy brethren, Messrs. Langs
ton and Gaines, who made the woods and
waters vibrate with their peals of eloquence
and truth, which ascended to the clouds and
was responded to by the waving of the ele
ments, which hailed the happy day of liber
ty to 800,000 human beings, by pouring
forth their fruitful showers and thus cele
brating the glorious anniversary.

The day passed off with much pleasure,
and was productive of great good, insomuch
that on the next evening, our worthy broth
er, J. M. Langston, spoke in one of our
largest halls, which was filled, and that to
overflowing, all eager to hear the truth, and
prepare their minds to act on the great
est of subjects—American Slavery. We
feel greatly encouraged to wait for the good
time coming.

Yours truly, for Liberty,

God and the Slave,

CHARLES RUSSELL.
