W. P. W. to Frederick Douglass, July 16, 1855
Such letters as the following, are very consoling to us while endeavoring to keep our head above the water. We hope all our subscribers will read them and then send us similar ones. Who will be the first? - Ed.
Cincinnati, July 16, 1855.
Mr. Frederick Douglas: Enclosed please find four dollars payment for one year's subscription in my own name and one year's subscription for H. S. Mount.
Newspaper men above all others should do a cash business because the credit system exposes them more than all other business men to the very great inconvenience of long terms and small charges. I hope your first year's experience of the new arrangement will result in the establishment of your invaluable paper upon a firmer basis than it has ever enjoyed before.
Respectfully,
W. P. W.
