Gerrit Smith to Frederick Douglass, July 28, 1854
For Frederick Douglass' Paper.
LETTER FROM HON. GERRIT SMITH.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, July 28.
DEAR DOUGLASS:—Our House lacked but a few votes of going against the Nebraska Bill. But its vote, a few minutes since, shows, that it lacks many votes of going against slavery.
Mr. Eliot, of Mass., having been so fortunate, as to get the floor, moved to suspend the Rules, for the purpose of bringing in a Bill for the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act.—Only 45 voted for his motion; 120 voted against it. Truly yours.
GERRIT SMITH.
