James Davis to Frederick Douglass, September 8, 1854
For Frederick Douglass' Paper.
A RESCUE.
SMITHFIELD, Ohio, August 29.
FREDERICK DOUGLASS: DEAR SIR:—I am happy to inform you that, about the close of the convention yesterday, in Salem, Ohio a telegraph despatch was received, stating that a slave girl would be here by the 6 o'clock train. We were at the depot as soon as the cars stopped, and delivered the spoil out of the hands of the spoiler. She is now in [t]he care of some tried friends of
Freedom. Her master and mistress were both on board. There was no heavy resistance offered on the part of the claimant, and no blood shed.
As ever yours, for
Freedom and Humanity,
JAMES DAVIS.
