Julia Griffiths Crofts to Frederick Douglass, January 16, 1862
15. Grove Terrace Leeds.
Jany 16th 1862—
My dear Friend Frederick /
At length I have the pleasure of sending
you £30—which will, I trust,
reach you safely—Please, see
that the directions concerning
the Papers are attended to
vide Montrose paper enclosed.
It only wants half an hour
to post this—& it has been
impossible for me to write
earlier in the day. Which
I regret exceedingly— Illness
& company together are the
causes, so dear sd excuse
brevity—Isabel Jennings
only sent yesterday & desires
her kind remembrances to
you—£1 of their donation
comes from a Mrs. Hoare of
Glenanon—who takes the
paper—& will consider her
subscription included of
course—ditto with Mr. E. Foster
but it is better to get £1 than 5p when we can—
The list sent amounts to £33. 17— 6— I retain the £3— 17— 6— towards the other £10— you spoke of in reference to the piano—The £3—from Rosetta came thus—£2— from Edinburgh Society—& £1— from Bristol, both are included in their amounts as sent to you—(viz £8— and £7)—
I send you the "Leeds Mercury" no time to speak of the times—May God Bless you my very dear Friend, & spare you to see the day, when all your people shall be free indeed—
Our poor LizzieGriffiths, Eliza
is very ill indeed—She fell down our steep staircase—& is spitting blood—all send love—
ever yr faithful old friend.
Julia G. Crofts
