Samuel Salisbury to Frederick Douglass, July 15, 1855
PROGRESS
FRIEND DOUGLASS:—The New York Western Christian Conference at its annual session, 25th of June last, passed the following resolutions after a spirited but friendly debate.
1. , That chattel slavey is alike opposed to the nature of man and the law of God; hence desstructive of all the interests of human society.
2. , That it is the will of God that every man should be ; we will as God wills; God's will be done.
3. , That as Christians, in view of the enactment of 1850, making the entire North a hunting ground for human blood-hounds, we are nevertheless, bound to obey God, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, do good unto all men.
4. , That to participate in the crime of slaveholding, either directly or indirectly, is to give indubitable evidence of anti-Christianity; and every person guilty of such crime, should be dealt with according to the Christian's creed,* and if unrepentant, should be published as having "gone from us."
5. , That more than ever, we feel , to preach, pray and against Slavery while we live.
The following on Temperance was passed :
, That we hail with unspeakable joy the enactment of the Prohibitory Liquor Law
of the State of New York, and hereby pledge ourselves to make every reasonable effort to enforce the said law.
The above certainly indicates a spirit of progress. May God speed the right!
Yours truly,
SAMUEL SALISBURY.
