Charles R. Douglass to Frederick Douglass, August 2, 1865
Freedman's Hospl.
Washington D.C. Aug. 2d '65
Dear Father
There is a boy at
this Hospl. that I think would
suit you first rate, his name is
Henry Strothers he came here from
Georgia with Shermans army
and would like very much to
get employment, I should
judge he was about thirteen
years old, he can milk take
care of horses and is used to most
any kind of work he is now
employed as orderly in the
office of this Hospl. He has
heard considerably about you
in the army and thinks he
would suit you, he is anxious
to learn also, if he does not get
a home soon it is likely he
may be turned loose here in
a strange place to seek his
fortune, several white men have
been after him but I have
persuaded him from going
with any of them because I
thought they were not
the right kind of folks to give
him a chance. What he does
here he does for his board but
he is willing to work for you
for his board and clothes.
By sending for him soon you
can get him.
Hoping this may find
all at home well Ill close
aff. your son.
Chas. R. Douglass
