L[ewis] Tappan to Frederick Douglass, November 27, 1856
Brooklyn, N. Y. 27th Nov. 1856.
Frederick Douglass, Esq.
My dear Sir,
Several packages have arrived from England "for the Ladies" Fair
at Rochester, and now are on their way. I have employed a Customs
House Broker to enter them & forward them. It may be best for you to
inquire of one of the merchants the best way to have the boxes sent
hence to Rochester, & inform me. The Duties will be considerable.
Will the Ladies provide me with funds to pay them! Very truly yours,
Lewis Tappan.
Will you send me a copy of your paper of the 17th October?
The Presidential election has resulted as I supposed it would. The
Republican platform was like "the edge of shaving." No coloured man
could stand on it, and therefore I could not. The Republicans must
strike their roots deeper, they must have a platform that will embrace
the coloured as well as the white man, and work against Slavery, root
and branch, and then, with God's blessing, they may expect success.
It would have given me pleasure had L. & F. been elected, as I think
he is a capable & honest man & one who would do all his party would
permit him to do. Let us labor to elevate the Northern sentiment.
