Frederick Douglass to James N. Gloucester, December 1863

Rochester, Dec., 1863

MY DEAR SIR: I cannot be with you on the 4th, because I cannot be bodily present to more than one place at one time; and it so happens that I have engaged to be in Cincinnati on the very night of your grant jubilee in aid of the freedom. I do wish I could be present, and give and receive whatever I am capable of giving and receiving on such an occasion. I have no fear that you will lack for speakers or hearers, and anticipate for you a very successful and happy time.

Very truly yours,

FRED'K DOUGLASS.
