Frederick Douglass to Maria G. Porter, September 26, 1859
Rochester, Sept. 26. 1859
My dear Miss Porter:
You kind informed me when last at your house that the Ladies Antislavery Society had generously donated (in aid of the publication of my paper) me $100- besides the proceeds of the sale of goods send from England for the same purpose—If the one hundred dolls. you gave me a check (which it got cashed) for fifty dollars. I am now endeavoring to pay up many old scores on account of paper, rent, press work and printing preparatory to leaving for England and am much in want of all yourself and the Ladies Society have kindly donated me. I shall be very thankful to you and your coworkers if you can let me have the same to day.
Very truly and gratefully yours
Frederick Douglass
