Charles Douglass to Frederick Douglass, October 10, 1867
Washington D.C.
October 10th 1867
Dear Father
I received your letter with cards enclosed bearing your autograph one day last week. Lieut. Sladen desires me to thank you for him, for the cards. The news of the late elections has surprised many here, and several of the heads of the different Departments here, are trembling in their boots awaiting the result. Andy Johnson will take fresh courage and renew his attacks against those under him who do not support his policy. Things all over the country are getting considerably mired, and my opinion is that more fighting will have to be done pretty soon. I received a letter from Lewis a few days ago, and he expects that he will be sent North by the company, some time during the coming winter.
General Howard accompanied by Lieut Sladen will pass through Rochester, Tuesday next at 10-30 A.M. on his way to Lockport. Libbie and the baby are well, and join me in love to yourself and Mother. The weather is becoming cool and pleasant, just as I like it. Love to Mother and all
Aff. Yr. Son
