Frederick Douglass to Gerrit Smith, December 25, 1874
Washington Dec. 25th "74
Hon. Gerrit Smith
Esteemed friend
I have just read your sound letter entitled "Will the American people never cease to oppress and torture the helpless poor" for which I am thankful, having spent my all in advocating justice through the "Era" which is now suspended I am not a little discouraged.
Again thanking you for your able letter
I am gratefully yours
Fredk Douglass Jr.
