Frederick Douglass to Miss [E.] Hanford, May 7, 1859
Dear Miss Hanford:
I am obliged by your favor of yesterday making the acquainted with the exact position of William Winston, in school, and telling me of the kind of Books he will require in the second grade, of which you are teacher. I regret very much that William, in whom welfare I feel a sincere interest should have failed to pass a creditable examination—and I fully appreciate the kindness, which will allow him notwithstanding his failure to enter the second grade upon trial.
Respectfully yours
Frederick Douglass
