Geo[rge] Johnson et al. to Frederick Douglass, September 28, 1871
Letter from California.
STOCKTON, CAL., September 28, 1871.
HON. F. DOUGLASS:
It would be doing high injustice to you not to forward you the victorious Republican State ticket, headed by a noble man in spirit and in truth—a man who is devoted to the cause you have so long fought for. Please accept this token from your esteemed friends, and permit us in this section of the Pacific slope, to congratulate you, and wishing you all success in your progress in the path of fame.
We have the honor to remain, yours respectfully,
GEO. JOHNSON,
W. W. LEE,
J. B. BARTON,
R. H. MINOR,
E. T. QUIVERS,
R. JACKSON,
ISAAC RODGERS,
JAMES BEADLEY,
JACK DAY,
JAMES CLEGGET,
MOSES HAMILTON,
JOHN H. JONES,
HENRY HALL.
Accompanying the above was a very neat gilt frame holding the successful ticket of the Republican party in California, with an engraving of the Hon. NEWTON BOOTH at its head. In tendering our thanks for the kind remembrance of the NEW NATIONAL ERA, and its efforts in the Republican cause, we offer our hearty congratulations to the men in California who have stood firmly by principle, and who have succeeded in bringing that great State into the line of progress, prominent among whom, and who are deserving of much credit, is to be found the heretofore despised colored man.
