G[eorge] T[hompson] Ruby to Frederick Douglass, October 23, 1871
Letter from Texas.
AUSTIN, TEXAS, October 23, 1871.
DEAR SIR: A few days since I sent you, with a request for its publication in your paper, a leader from our in reply to the "Open Letter of Thirty-Two" from this State, published in the Missouri , as addressed to the Hon. Carl Schurz, and then copied and commented upon favorably by the Chicago . You will confer upon us a deep sense of obligation in thus adding to the many kindly expositions of the Republican administration here, through the columns of your paper, if you will find space for the enclosed official vindication of our present State government, in answer to the "Civil Service Reform in Texas" article of the Chicago . We are aware that in making this request we are trying your courtesy and kindness to the utmost in thus burdening your columns with so lengthy an exposition; but, as upon the false statements of the thirty two citizens of Dallas, Texas, the Chicago , New York , and other leading papers of that class among Republican journals North, have assumed to arraign and find guilty the present State administration of Texas, we feel, and honorably so, that the condition of affairs here, to which we invite the most rigid scrutiny, cannot be too widely known, and we therefore seek publication through your paper.
Truly yours,
G. T. RUBY.
