A. Cade to Frederick Douglass, April 15, 1870

New York 15th April 1870.

Dear Sir & friend,

"Man proposes & God disposes" is an old saying which the more we advance in life the more we can understand its wisdom. Since my arrival here it has been planned by me to go over with my wife & pay you a visit at your home in Rochester where you so hospitably & warmly welcomed me some nine years ago. I have seen you and have explained already the events which have prevented me from fulfilling this desire. But yet I expected that later I would have had a chance to do it before leaving entirely the United States, for I owe you that visit, I owe it to you for your devotion to your race, your persistant & intelligent labor to its elevation & welfare and for the rare & admirable talent you have shown.

in pursueing such a noble and immortalizing course.

Unfortunately I must leave & I leave to morrow for Europe without realizing the proposed visit.

However, let me contragulate you, you & your friends, you have won the victory! How gladdening must it be for your heart to consider now the great triumph you have so considerably contributed to win for your race!

For my part, as a member of that same race, I feel that I owe you in admiration & gratitude a debt which is in no mortal's power to pay on this earth!

Believe me, dear Sir & friend, wherever I go, I will always remember your name with pride & gratitude!

My wife unites her kindest regards to the best wishes I here make for your happiness & prosperity truly your friend

A Cade
