George W. Goines to Frederick Douglass, May 20, 1850
Letter from Geo. W. Goines
Frederick Douglass, Sir:—I attended a meeting on last Thursday evening, at the Second Presbyterian Church, St. Mary street, under a call of a bill that was placarded about the streets; which state, "that the lower part of the Church would be exclusively appropriated for white citizens;" and to my entire astonishment, I there saw a number of our oldest and most respectable inhabitants seated in the gallery. Whether all had been shown up there by those in attendance, I am not able to say,—but that some were, I am sure is true.
I was astonished that Mr. Ward said nothing on that occasion against the proscription proposed, and to some extent carried out. I protested against the bill making said distinction, on first sight, and no argument that I have heard as yet, has convinced me that it was right.
Yours, for principle, not policy,
Geo. W. GoinesGoines, George W.
