W. C. Fegles to Frederick Douglass, December 3, 1849
Rochester, Dec. 3d. 1849.
Mr. Douglass:
Sir,ーThe recent action of the Board of Education of this city, in establishing a school on the East side of the river, for the instruction of colored children, has made it my unpleasant duty to dismiss from the school all such children, that they may attend the schoolhouse mentioned.
Yours respectfully,
W. C. FeglesFeagles, William C.
William C. Feagles (c. 1820–?) was a schoolteacher in western New York. He began his education in a log schoolhouse before enrolling at the East Aurora Academy. He first taught in Wyoming County before he took a position in Rochester, teaching there for twelve years. He then moved to Buffalo, teaching there for several years before becoming the principal of school number forty there. In the 1890s, Feagles travelled to California, making a study of a number of schools en route. He seems to have passed sometime between 1910 and 1913. Buffalo (N.Y.)
