William Nesbit to Frederick Douglass, August 25, 1855

HOLLIDAYSBURG, August 25th, 1855.

MESSRS. EDITORS:—I see by the Herald of 23d
inst., that Capt. Thomas Chester is still barking
at me, despite the drubbing which he received
at my hands in a fair open discussion in Harris
burg, on last Tuesday evening. Respecting my
refusal to answer his questions, I only did so
because after publishing his ungentlemanly
challenge, he declined to meet me, dared not
discuss the merits or demerits of my book, un
til goaded to it by the taunts and jeers of every
one conversant with the facts. He does not
say one word about the discussion when it did
take place. He, and I, and every body else
that was present, perfectly understand his si
lence on that subject. The truth is, that after
the people heard both of us, they unanimously
decided in my favor. When the vote was taken
there was not one dissenting voice, and just so
I can vanquish any other hireling pimp, seeking
the destruction of my race for his own aggran
dizement. His allusion to my "mind," and chin
"shaving" is trash. I have proved myself his
master, and think him small game, and when
occasion requires, will, despite the sophistry of
abler antagonists, prove before a Harrisburg
audience, that of all the humbugs of this age,
Liberian Colonization is the greatest. Mean
time let him snarl like another cur. By pub
lishing this you will do justice to a persecuted
cause and oblige,

WILLIAM NESBIT.
