August 12 '67
Frederick Douglass,
My dear friend,
Mr Smith & me turned home safe—& laden with pleasent remembrances of our visit to your & yours.
I hope you received the note which I sent you, the morning I left Rochester—I hope too that you will soon send me the letter, which you kindly consented to write me. I may conclude to say something to the public of the purposes of our old friend J. B. & of his sublime character—& to [extract?] in what I say your letter & one or two other letters from those who knew him well.
With great regard, your friend,
Gerrit Smith—
