Frederick Douglass to Gerrit Smith, September 19, 1867
Rochester, Sept 19th 1867
Hon Gerrit Smith,
My dear Sir: Thanks for your kind note. Your approval is always valued. My friend Tilton has made a little [illegible] of my declining the Freedmen's Bureau—I told him I had been applied to by parties near the President to know if I would accept the office and that I had said no. My note to him though not marked private was not intended for publication. Did the Chicago Tribue respond to your John Brown circular? Miss Assing will let you know of her coming. I leave house tomorrow for West Chester Pa and shall be absent about one week. Please remember me kindly to Dear Mrs Smith.
Your very truly
Frederick Douglass
