Charles R. Douglass to Frederick Douglass, September 27, 1867
WAR DEPARTMENT,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
Washington, Sept. 27th 1867
Dear Father,
I returned to this city this evening just in time to go to the office without being too late. General Howard was very sorry not to have seen you, before leaving the city, and made several inquires as to your stopping place. Lieut. J. A. Sladen to whom I gave you an introduction, desires very much to obtain your auto graph to the enclosed cards. He is a Massachusetts man and is my friend. I have not yet been home, not having
time enough before coming to the office. While I was absent from the office yesterday with you, one of the soldiers who attends to distributing the mail, purloined one of the Genls. letters and took therefrom a check for ten dollars and presented it to the Bank without the Genls. signature, He was arrested and will be Court Marshaled. I am glad that he was caught as all of the Genls. letters come before me and of late several letters have been missed.
Love to all at home.
