Frederick Douglass to Gerrit Smith, August 28, 1868
Rochester: Aug. 28, 1868.
Hon: Gerrit Smith:
My dear Sir: I almost felt yesterday morning, on seeing Mrs Miller as I jumped from the platform of a car at Geneva, that I had caught a glimpse of your own friendly face. I should have certainly accepted her kind invitation to Peterboro—but for a positive engagement in Rochester for this day. It was delightful to be met with such cordial and almost commanding civilities. At the celebration I saw too the kind face of Mrs. [Talmadge?] the crowd—cheering me on by her attention and sympathy—
Your friend,
Frederick Douglass
