Frederick Douglass to George Ellwanger, April 9, 1869
Rochester, April 9th 1869
My dear Sir:
I am obliged to you for a printed copy of the Eights Annual Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors of Monroe County.
You will allow me to thank you for the laws, and also to express to you, my high appreciation of your noble and independent spirit, in the matter of naming those required to serve the county as Grand Jurymen.
It is often easier to face Pistols than to face prejudice: A little brute courage can do the former, but only rare moral courage can unflinchingly do the latter. Your reward is not in my thanks but in the sense of rectitude. I will not mar it by my poor praise.
Respectfully yours
Frederick Douglass
George Ellwanger Esqr.
