Frederick Douglass to Mary Ann Shadd Cary, July 5, 1871
Rochester, July 5th 1871.
Dear Mrs Cary:
My sons Lewis and Frederick, will inform you as to the terms upon which— we shall be glad to have your aid and corporation in the work of extending the circulation of the "New National Era"—and I cannot but hope they will be considered just and liberal. My opinion is that with your voice and pen, and with the "New National Era" to assist in holding up your hands, you will be grandly successful, not only in helping the paper and the people but in helping yourself—In your stead I would not make my journeys but work along gradually South and West taking places en route. Make editors of local paper ssee taht "Era" does not interfere with their circulation. Their's are local. The "Era" national—But you need no suggestions from me—
Your friend
Fredk Douglass
The foregoing is supplemental to my note of yesterday.
