O[liver] O[tis] Howard to Frederick Douglass, September 19, 1871
Washington D.C. Sept. 19th 1871
Frederick Douglass Esq:
Rochester N. Y.
My dear Sir,
My brother a rather persistent young man claims that he had a promise from you which has not yet been fulfilled, viz: to write him an article or letter to help on his extra "Advance" for the Amer. Miss. Association. If you could give him the Epitome of what you said on San Domingo at our Congregational Church it would just suit. His next issue will be in October. This Extra helps get contributions to our Southern schools for the children of freedmen by circulating information on them; spread with other readable articles amongst the Churches. Now if you could scrape up a few moments, now and then, and
do this thing, Charles will be gratified and I shall be placed under renewed obligations.
Very truly Yours,
(signed) O. O. Howard
P.S. The University opens finely this year.
