Frederick Douglass to Jonathan Baldwin Turner, April 2, 1877
Washington D.C. April 2d 1877
Dear Prof Turner.
Many thanks for your hearty congratulations. No man in the Country can better understand than you do the Significance of my appointment and confirmation as Marshal of the D.C. My history is a strange one: First a chattel, then a fugitive, afterward a freeman, and now a U.S. Marshal at the Capital of the Nation. With many thanks for your good letter and kind regards to your dear household
Yours truly
Fredk Douglass
