Frederick Douglass Sarah Poole, August 3, 1846

1

Dear Sarah—You don’t know how kind it was of you to send me that nice little note. (Don’t mind grammar so you get the sense). I was truly glad to see on paper what I knew to be in your heart—a good and kind Spirit. I love to get such notes—which answer themselves or require no answering are always welcome, I do not regret having met you on the evening to which you allude—So far from it. I may say I should delight to meet you again. I want to see—to hear you and know more of you, and to know more of your family and friends. I have never been satisfied with my meeting Lizzy neither was I satisfied with my meeting with Joseph. I know just enough of you and all—to induce a strong desire to know more of you. But how can that desire be gratified that is the question. The probabilities are decidedly against any hope of ever seeing you again. I have already spent too much time in Ireland, and shall be hard pressed to find time to visit many very important Towns in both England & Scotland which it is my wish and intention to visit if possible before I leave. But whither I see you again or not—whither I even hear from you again or not. If you remember me—as I shall do you there will remain an affectionate interest in each others welfare while we live. I love the same things in every body—and hate the same things in every body—No Country Clime or Color make any difference with me.

I am now in New Castle upon Tyne. I’m to lecture tomorrow night. It is expected I shall have a good meeting good notice having been given of it. I shall lecture in Sheilds on tuesday night. I have not yet decided to go to London. I shall if my previous engagements will permit. I am having a good time here with the Richardsons and Forsters kind hearted people—Please remember me to Lizzy & Joseph—and to my good friend Marian Waring when you write—

In haste—I am very sincerely and

respectfully F Douglass
