George W. Goines to Frederick Douglass, June 14, 1848

1

Philadelphia, June 14th, 1848.

Dear Douglass.—Doubtless you and some of your readers, will be pleased to learn that we have achieved a glorious victory in the old key-stone State. I will not attempt to give you the whole particulars of the case, but will merely state that about a year ago, two bloodhounds left the State of Maryland to seek a prey, that they had learned was in Pennsylvania. They made a visit to Carlisle where they found a man and two women whom they claimed as theirs; they arrested them in defiance of our laws that kidnappers should be punished! But thank God, there were a few men, noble-minded men, that would or could not stand and see their brothers or sisters carried into interminable bondage by Christian Americans, who nob’y stood forth in defence of their rights as freemen, and succeeded in recapturing the individuals from the grasp of the cradle robber and set them at liberty; and during the melee, the slaveholder was very badly injured and died in a few weeks—consequently a great many persons were arrested and thrown into prison; after a form of a trial, Judge Hepburne sentenced eleven men to the Eastern Penitentiary for three years each; committees were formed throughout the State, and money was raised to test the legality of the sentence, and after a lapse of nine months or more, these eleven men were discharged by the Supreme Court, on the ground of illegal sentence. So the slaveholders and their abettors have been defeated once in Pennsylvania, which I think will be a warning in future; these men have gone home with instructions from Philadelphia, that should other slaveholders pay them a similar visit, to treat them the same way or form such an attachment for them as never to let them leave.

I am Dear Sir, yours very respectfully in the cause of human liberty,

G. W. GOINES.
