S. M. M. to Frederick Douglass, February 2, 1849

Rochester, Feb. 2d, 1849.

Frederick Douglass, Sir,ーThe enclosed $2 is designed to aid the circulation of the North Star. Please accept it. Should it meet your approbation, you may send the current volume of the Star to some poor but worthy colored person, who would be benefitted by its perusal; or appropriate it any way you may deem most proper, for the relief of the oppressed or freedom of the enslaved.

I have long hesitated about sending so small a sumーwhich is, in truth, trifling when compared with the importance and greatness of the cause which you advocateーbut cannot see that withholding it is likely to increase the amount. I shall therefore venture to send it, accompanied with all the good wishes and ardent desires for the prosperity and ultimate success of the anti-slavery cause tha[n] a larger amount could be.

Should the future reveal to me a "sunny spot" on life's dark way, unclouded by nostrums and doctor's bills, I hope to be at least more active if not more useful.

Very respectfully, &c., S. M. M.
