Frederick Douglass to H[enry] C[lay] Naill, July 8, 1869

"Rochester, July 8, 1869

":

It is hard to say no to any request that reaches me from my native State, and therefore I say yes to your invitation to the Emancipation in Frederick on the on the 15th August.

"My home is a long way from Frederick, but that can be overcome by ample compensation, say one hundred dollars. If that sum can be raised in advance of my coming, I shall not be subjected to the necessity of taking up a collection when I come, a thing that, too often mars the public doings of colored people and results in loss to their public speakers.

"Respectfully yours,

"FREDERICK DOUGLASS.

"Mr. H. Clay Naill."
