Dean &C.

My dear Sir:

Your respected note of December, Strange to say, has just fallen into my hands, and this will acct to you for what would seem an inexcusable silence. Please convey to the Faculty my sincere regret for being unable to comply with their kind invitation to be present on the occasion of the Commencement Exercises on the 10th July 1874. It would give me very great pleasure to be with you but I have implied engagements such as to make it unwise for me to promise to come

I am dear Sir
