Frederick Douglass to Henry Highland Garnet, March 19, 1874
Washington D.C. March 19, 1874
Rev. Henry Highland Garnet:
My Dear Sir, I am sincerely obliged to you for your excellent letter. I know of no source from which such an assurance as you give, could be more welcome. I hesitated to accept the trust with which the Trustees kindly honored me—but the promises of gentlemen like yourself have induced me to accept and I shall if life be spared enter upon the duties of President of the Freedmens Bank and trust Company on the first of April.
