Principal Office of the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company

Washington, D.C. May 23rd, 1874

My dear SirEdmunds, George Franklin

George Franklin Edmunds (1828-1919) was a Vermont lawyer, state representative, 1854-1859; state senator, 1861-1862; and U.S. senator, 1866-1891.
:

I give you joy on the passing of your Civil Rights Bill through Senate. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your agency in this sublime triumph of justice and civilization. Your position was assailed in the Senate last night only by prejudice and false reasoning. The Colored Citizen was put in the position of helplessly imploring somebody to lift them up when in fact your Bill only rolls from his breath an intolerable burden.
