Gerrit Smith to Frederick Douglass, February 29, 1868

Hon. Gerrit Smith, in a recent letter addressed to Frederick Douglass writes: "I see in the newspapers that you are warmly for the election of Gen. Grant. I hope he recognizes the great political, as well as moral truth that a "man's a man." No nation can prosper, or permanently endure, that fails, cordially and practically, to recognize this vital truth. I am often asked whom I would have for President. My answer is that one might about as well ask an affectionate husband, who is his preference amonged women. I have known Chief-Justice Chase a long time, and intimately. So great is my admiration of him for his profound wisdom; so deep is my love of him for his many virtues; and, in my view, so strikingly supplied is he with all the elements of character for a chief magistrate, that I feel myself to be quite incapable of an unbiased comparison between him and other candidates for the Presidency."
