Gerrit Smith to Frederick Douglass, September 20, 1874
Peterboro
Sept. 20 1874
My dear Douglass,
Many thanks for your letter. I continue to do what, in my way & remember to her health, I can for the cause of righteousness. I rejoice in the hope that you have 20 or 30 years longer in which to work for that dear cause.
So you have no copy of Weld's grand pamphlet: "American Slavery as it is!" I take great pleasure in sending you one. I hope it will reach you safely. I thank the New National Era for thinking so kindly of me. I fear that the Dem. Party will, after all, destroy our guilty nation
Your friend
