Nathan and Rosetta Sprague to Frederick Douglass, March 3, 1867
Rochester March 26, 1867
My Dear father
I will now write
my first letter to you to let you
known what I have been doing.
I have let my farm go for a house and
lot. I am now in the city I got hear
one week ago to day I have not got to
work yet but I will soon. Rosa is
glad to get in the city. I like [afarm?] but
I saw that 1800 dollars was to much for
me to go $700 came due this spring the
man that I got it from told
me that it came due in five years
then I fo^und out $700 came duethis spring,
I would like to have a farm but it was too
much for me. Just as soon asI can get to
work the better I will feel. I have been
on the go night and day, and then I saw
that I couldnot make my ends meet.
1960
I think you will like my place
that I have. The house is 62 Pearl St
the same street Wm. Ottoway lives on
The man feels that I have got the
advantage of him and thinks he can get
his place back again. The man had the
records of my place searched It was a fair
trade. Annie is the only one that seems not
to like her new home as she every little
while cried to go home.
Your affectionate
Son-in-law
Nathan Sprague
