Nathaniel Richmond to Frederick Douglass, December 26, 1851
Collins, Erie Co., N.Y., Dec. 26, 1851.
Brother Douglass, Sir:—Died in Collins, Erie County, New York, CLARA RICHMONDRichmond, Clara
, only daughter of NATHANIELRichmond, Nathaniel
and LAVINIA RICHMONDRichmond, Lavinia
, aged 22 years 11 months and 19 days.
The deceased was born in Ledgyard Town, Cayuga County, New York, and removed from there with her parents, in the Spring of 1831, then two years and six months old. At the age of 17 years, she felt the need of a Savior, and had evidence that her heart had been changed from nature to grace. [Two] years from this time, she made a public profession of her attachment to the cause of her divine Lord and Master, and related her Christian experience to the first Baptist Church of Christ, in Collins, and received into their fellowship and [watchcare], and was baptized in the liquid stream by their beloved pastor, Elder David, in January, 1848. Thus uniting herself with the Church of Christ, of which she has been a constant and worthy member and ever found an advocate for the [truth and] the holy religion she professed, until her efforts were checked by death, her body consigned to the grave, and her spirit [...] saints everlasting rest. Thus she was taken away in her youthful days, in the [morning of]
life, by that fatal disease, the [Consumption.] During an illness of ten months, [and notwith]standing the severe sufferings, at times [she] was remarkably patient; not a [murmuring] word escaped her lips, and she was ever resigned to the will of her heavenly Master. Therefore, in her death, her parents have lost an affectionate and beloved daughter, and her brothers a loving sister, and her acquaintances, one that was solicitous for their present and future welfare. The Church has seen another of her number [postate] that Zion's King's advocates are a falling which admonishes us to diligence and duty in the service of our Divine Redeemer.
So, therefore, what is our loss is her everlasting gain.
Funeral discourse given by Elder David Reacher, from Exodus, 33d Chapter, the 14th Verse, "And he said my presence shall go with thee."
Yours, for the oppressed and kidnapped of our land,
Nathaniel Richmond.
