Friend of Man to Frederick Douglass, January 1, 1852

The American League of Freedom.

Friend Douglass:—Such a League is needed. Let the "Liberty Party," "Liberty League," and Free Soil cognomens all be relinquished, and let us all join on common anti-slavery principles, for an onset against the slave power at the next presidential election. On our flag, let the watch-word float: "THE AMERICAN LEAGUE OF FREEDOM!"

Yours, Friend of Man.
