F. Smith to Frederick Douglass, August 19, 1852

Norway, Herkimer County,

August 19th, 1852.

Friend Douglass:—The Pittsburgh nomination gives very general satisfaction among the friends of freedom hereabouts; and from present indications, they will receive a heavy vote. I trust the platform there made is sufficiently broad for the Liberty Party to stand upon, and battle with the Free Democracy, not only against the great evil of slavery, but against all the evils that curse our land.

There is much dissatisfaction manifested here, by the liberal portion of the Whig party, against the Scott Platform; and several influential ones here that supported Gen. Taylor in '48, are now enthusiastic for Hale and Julian.

The Democracy, which went almost unanimously the Free Soil ticket in '48, have followed, with a few honorable exceptions, the Judases and Arnolds of the press and stump, back into the fold of hunkerism; like the man we read of in Scripture, they have resolved to "return into the house from whence they came out; and when they have come, they find it empty, swept, and garnished (of all anti-slavery,) and they take with themselves [illegible] other spirits more wicked than themselves; and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of these men is worse than the first."
