J. C. Harrington to Frederick Douglass, August 21, 1852

1

Granby, August 21st, 1852.

Frederick Douglass—Sir:—I am directed, by the meeting of which the following is a copy of minutes of preceedings, to forward the same, with the request that you will publish the same in your paper.

A meeting of the Liberty Party of Oswego County, was held, pursuant to public notice, at the Wesleyan Chapel, in Fulton, August [20th], 1852. J. C. Harrington was appointed President, and E. E. Bristol, Secretary.

A Committee, composed of Wm. Chapman, Wm. Salmon, A. S. Wing, and Jacob Kendall, were appointed to submit business for the consideration of the Convention, who reported the following resolutions, which were debated and adopted:

A. S. Wing, Wm. L. Salmon, and Horace Gilbert were appointed delegates to the National Liberty Party Convention, to be held at Canastota on the first day of September next.

1. Resolved, That every Christian body should name lately diverse itself from all connection with, and fellowship of the horrible sin of slaveholding: and that it is the duty of every individual member of such body to withdraw therefrom, if, after due admonition, it refuses to do so.

2. Resolved, That the religious bodies of this land, by adopting and sanctifying the Baltimore platforms, in their political influence, and by demurely listening to the lower law sentiments of such Drs. of divinity as Lord, Spring, &c., prove themselves untrue to humanity, and have takent he last step in apostacy.

3. Resolved, That it is the intention of the Liberty Party of Oswego County to retain its political integrity, and to sustain its principles, that constitute a righteous civil government; and that we can in no [wise] lower our standard of political morality, to unite with any political body.

4. Resolved, That we humbly recommend the holding of a State Libery Party Convention, at a [illegible] time and place, to make nominations for the ensuing election.

5. Resolved, That we have confidence in the anticipated National Liberty Party Convention, to be held at Canastota, the first of September next; and we trust and fondly hope that it will preserve the purity and truthfulness of its former principles.
