George T. Downing to Frederick Douglass, December 10, 1852

1

Gen. Scott and a Committee of Thirteen.

Friend Douglass:—Permit me to say that there is, at least, one member of the Committee of Thirteen, who has not the weight upon his conscience of having voted for Gen. Scott or Franklin Pierce. I make this disclaimer as one of that Committee, as I deem it necessary, because of the allusion made in the last number of your paper by Communipaw; and to add my condemnation of such unjustfiable inconsistency and blindness, and to strive to give vitality to this much needed Committee, to at least induce them to speak in their own defence.
