Geo[rge] T. Downing to Frederick Douglass, August 6, 1853
NEWPORT, R. I., Aug. 6th, 1853.
DEAR DOUGLASS:—Enclosed is $13—the
result of a trifling effort. May every colored
man make a similar one. They owe it to the
paper, as an able and efficient agent and de-
fender of their cause. And to you, as repre-
senting them faithfully, able, and honorably.
Horace Greeley calls upon us to do some-
thing. We can point to things done. Let us be
able to say that we support an organ devot-
ed to our interests, and it will be an earnest
of our determination to "do something."
Yours truly,
GEO. T. DOWNING.
