J[ames] R[awson] J[ohnson] to Frederick Douglass, March 25, 1853
Deacon Allen Kingsbury
FRIEND DOUGLASS:—That man was one of
the excellent of the earth. Brother A. Pryne
of Cazenovia has well written the obituary
notice; it is explicit, comprehensive and con-
densed.
The exactness and promptitude with which
Dea. Kingsbury transacted all business mat-
ters is worthy of record. No benevolent
agency suffered in his hands. In a letter ad-
dressed to me, one says: "He died as you
might expect a man to die who lived the life
which he had lived. He died at peace with
God, and at peace with the world. (I do not
mean at peace with the sins of the world.")
His closing expressions were: "Love! Love!
Happy! Happy!" May his mantle fall on
many others. To whom shall we look to fill
his place? We must look to those who love
God for what he is, and who evince that love
by a proper regard to all the beings whom
God hath erected.
Yours, J. R. J.
