Lyndon King to Frederick Douglass, April 1, 1853

"L. D. Tanner's Letter."

FREDERICK DOUGLASS: SIR:—In looking
over your paper of the 14th inst., a day or two
since, I noticed an article from L. D. Tan-
ner addressed to myself; and I was surprised
and grieved that you should give circulation
by publishing in your columns charges and
insinuations so decidedly injurious in their
character and tendency, against one with
whose position and course you have had the
personal and intimate acquaintance, that you
have had with mine.

With regard to the writer of that article, I
have nothing to say; but of the charges and
insinuations contained in the letter, I affirm,
that they are unfounded, abusive and slanderous! and it appears to me, that writers and
publishers labor under a mistake, if they sup-
pose that "bearing false testimony against
their neighbor" will promote the cause of
"humanity" and "equality."

I am perfectly willing that my course, in
the affair alluded to in L. D. Tanner's letter,
should be submitted to the strictest scrutiny;
but I am not willing that base fabrications
should be circulated through the various
presses of the country, and my character
judged of by such a criterion.

Yours for the truth,

LYNDON KING.

It is not for us to take up the controversy, in be-
half of L. D. TANNER, with Lyndon King. Our
warrant for the publication of that letter is found in
the circumstances of the case, and in the notoriety
which had already been given to the leading inci-
dents connected with it. If those statements, which
had appeared in the public press, were true, the
anti-slavery public had a right to know them; if
false, we had a right to place them where they
could be contradicted. Whether the above letter
is such a contradiction as will cover the ground of
the allegations made by Mr. Tanner, the good sense
of our readers will decide.-Ed. F. D.'s Paper.
