Pittsburgh to Frederick Douglass, September 1, 1853

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 1st, 1853.

MR. F. DOUGLASS: DEAR SIR:—I noticed
in your paper of the 26th of August, a Call
for a "National Emigration Convention,"
which I believe was originated in this city,
and ratified by a meeting held in Alleghany
City.

That the meeting which ratified this Call
expressed the sentiments of the colored peo
ple of these two cities, I do not suppose any
of the persons whose names are attached to
the Call would pretend to assert. The at
tendance, I understood, was quite small,
which at the largest must have been so, as
the house in which it was held is quite an in
capacious one. While I do not entertain the
least fears that any considerable number of
our Pittsburgh people will subscribe to this
movement, I do deeply regret that men of
intelligence (as some of [th]e Pittsburghers
whose names are attached to this Call un
doubtedly are) should be found "giving aid
and comfort" to a movement the end of
which is our removal from this country;
when our removal from this country is the
darling object which the members of that ne
farious Colonization Society have so long
and devotedly prayed for.

Whether we emigrate ourselves or are
colonized by them, remove at our expense
or their's, so we but leave the United States,
they will have realized their detestible ex
pectation. Respecting the Call itself, (to
which I think an emigrationist might seri
ously object,) I at present have nothing to
say. Hoping that this movement may meet
with respectful yet determined opposition
from all quarters of the Union,

I am yours respectfully,

PITTSBURGH.
