For Frederick Douglass Paper
New York April 6 '55
A company of colored citizens of the city of New York have purchased a plot of woodland containing six acres situated in the town of Key Neck, Westchester Co, NY. It is twenty three and a half miles from New York City, adjoining the New Haven Railroad, one hour and forty minutes ride and within ten minutes walk from Mamaronek Depot.
The Co. desire to make this a comfortable retreat for all respectable persons, who would enjoy a visit of a few weeks or months in the country. It will, indeed afford great relief from a city life, during the hot weather of Summer. The Company propose opening said Grove, about the second week in May, during Anniversary. They have secured the services of Frederick Douglas, Esq of Rochester, to deliver an oration at Key Neck on the occasion. After which, as soon as practicable, they intend to erect on their land a chapel, a school house with mechanical shops attached, for the training of colored youth in the various mechanical pursuits. Also suitable boarding house, for public accommodation.
