About the Unpublished Documents

As a result of an extensive document search at the outset of the Frederick Douglass Papers project, more than 5,000 documents to and from him were located. The editors made the necessary decision to publish a selection of letters from the full corpus because of space limitations in the books. Therefore each of the four correspondence volumes includes full texts and annotations for 200-250 letters, but lists many hundreds more that were not printed in full. Those are made available here for the first time as fully searchable texts. The digital edition now includes full texts for all documents calendared in the Correspondence Volumes, but users should be aware that these documents have not been annotated or as fully vetted as published documents by the editors themselves.
